Artist in Residency: Black Rock Senegal

In 2024, Keith spent time in Dakar, as the first musician selected for the fourth-year artist-in-residence program at Black Rock Senegal (www.blackrocksenegal.org), an international residency founded by Kehinde Wiley. While there, he explored the deep connections within the African diaspora through music—examining the shared language, instruments, and sonic ideas that transcend borders and cultures. Immersed in a global community of creators, he engaged in artistic exchange that broadened his perspective and deepened his practice. His residency culminated in an exhibition where he showcased his work alongside fellow artists, further expanding his artistic vision.

Named for the volcanic rocks that blanket its shoreline, Black Rock is a multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program. The residency brings together international artists to live and work in Dakar, Senegal for 1-3 month stays. The Black Rock compound design was conceived by Senegalese architect Abib Djenne with interior collaboration between Wiley, Fatiya Djenne, and Aissa Dione. The complex includes a residence and studio space for Wiley along with three single-occupancy residency apartments with adjacent studio spaces. The mission is to support new artistic creation through collaborative exchange and to incite change in the global discourse about what Africa means today.

From May 16th to June 16th, Black Rock Sénégal hosted an exhibition of alumni work from years 3 and 4 of the residency at the Blaise Senghor Cultural Center in Dakar, Sénégal. The exhibition, titled Encounters, was curated by Dr. Jareh Das and presented various themed groupings based on the medium, drawing inspiration from experiences in Dakar during residency periods over the past two years. Included in this exhibit was Tutt’s work called “Inward”, an introspective composition form the greater work “Wander, All Roads Deliver”.

Sonikwell™

A unique, wellness experience providing deep relaxation, emotional release, and rejuvenation through mindfully crafted compositions.

According to studies, both physical and mental hardships can be managed with the help of sound therapy (also known to sonikwell™ as sound-aided release). The cello's distinctive tonal resonance permeates the body and induces profound calm. The sound vibrations of the cello, according to research, are similar to those in the human body. As a result, stress and worry can be released, and the body can start to recover both emotionally and physically.

To affect a person on a core level, the sonikwell™ experience makes use of the science of vibrations and energy produced by the cello along with technical equipment to envelope audience members in a renewing wave of music.
